When someone needs a local tradesperson, Google is often the first place they look.
They may search for “plumber near me,” “electrician in [town]” or “builder near me” and choose from the businesses that appear in the map results. Your Google Business Profile plays a major part in whether you show up and whether customers decide to contact you.
For many small trade businesses, it can be one of the simplest ways to improve local visibility.
Start by making sure every detail is accurate.
Your business name, phone number, website, opening hours and service area should all be up to date. Choose the category that best describes your main service, then add relevant secondary categories where appropriate.
This helps Google understand what your business does and where it should appear in local searches.
It also makes life easier for customers. If someone finds your profile and sees the wrong phone number, an old website or an unclear service area, they may move on before getting in touch.
Do not leave your profile with only a basic business description.
Add the services you want to be known for. A plumber may include emergency repairs, boiler servicing, bathroom plumbing and leak detection. An electrician may list rewires, EV chargers, electrical testing and fault finding.
Use clear language that customers would recognise. The goal is to make it obvious that you can help with the work they need done.
Photos make a local business profile more useful and more trustworthy.
Upload completed projects, before-and-after images, team photos, branded vehicles and short videos from jobs. This gives people a sense of the type and quality of work you carry out.
You do not need expensive photography for every update. A clear phone photo of a finished job can be enough, particularly when it is paired with a short explanation of the work completed.
Reviews are often one of the first things customers look at.
A steady flow of genuine feedback shows that people have used your business recently and had a good experience. It can make the difference between someone calling you or choosing another local company.
Ask for a review once the job is complete and the customer is happy. Keep the request simple and make it easy for them to leave feedback. When reviews come in, respond professionally and thank customers for taking the time.
Your Google Business Profile should not be treated as something you set up once and forget about.
Add new photos, update services, post project updates and check that your details remain accurate. This helps show customers that your business is active and gives them more confidence to contact you.
